Naomi Watts’ anticipated biopic, “Diana”, is coming out in three weeks. For those of you that don’t know, Watts is starring as Princess Diana in the biopic based off of the last two years of her life.
The Sunday Times recently interviewed Watts about playing the world’s most beloved Princess. Watts revealed in the interview that she actually turned down the role twice before accepting. “Well, of course, apart from the comparisons that were obviously going to be made, the biggest reason that made me pause was how the princes were going to feel about this.”
Watts told The Sunday Times about an instance when she ran into Prince William. “There was actually quite an eerie moment in London when I did see Prince William in a restaurant, and I got very nervous, because if I caught his eye I didn’t want to interpret a look and think he had a negative feeling about this idea, so I made sure not to look.”
Watts cherishes motherhood, which she demonstrates by being an active member of children’s theater. ITM saw Watts and her Partner, Liev Schreiber, last season at an event supporting the 42nd St Theater in New York City with their two boys, Alexander and Samuel.
Watts cites her motherhood, per The Sunday Times, as why she cares what Prince William and Prince Harry think of the film. “I do care deeply about how they feel, of course. I am a mum of two boys. But it was a story that was bound to be told at some point, and it is possibly fresher than people expected. I don’t think they will be upset, I really don’t — it’s not that kind of film. It’s not particularly controversial, it’s just possibly the idea of it actually being made.”
The biopic is set to premiere on September 20th.
