Sasheer Zamata is the newest cast member of “Saturday Night Live.” While women have been making their mark in the hilarious sketch show for quite some time, it’s women of color who have been absent.
Sasheer Zamata is the first African American woman to join the cast in 6 years, with the departure of Maya Rudolph in 2007. Producers of the hit NBC show have been criticized recently for lack of diversity, however it seems this was not from lack of trying.
SNL cast member Kenan Thompson explained to TV guide the show’s difficulty in finding African American women who were qualified saying, “Like in auditions, they just never find ones that are ready.” It seems however, the search it over!
Sasheer will be stepping into some pretty big, and very funny, shoes. With previous female cast members including Molly Shannon, Kristen Wiig and Amy Poehler, who all have films premiering at this years Sundance Film Festival, it won’t be an easy task.
With all the news surrounding the addition of Sasheer, we hope she can bring the funny!
ITM is rooting for the newest funny lady! Hopefully we will be seeing more memorable characters; Kristen Wiig’s “Target Lady”, Amy Poehler’s “Kaitlin,” and of course, Molly Shannon’s “Mary Katherine Gallagher.”
