During his presentation at Cannes Lions, the world’s largest celebration of creativity in communications, Bono directed a bit of friendly fire at Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design, Jony Ive, who just happened to be seated nearby. The “Beautiful Day” singer said, “One of the reasons it’s such a credit to have Jony Ive on the stage is because Apple is so f–king annoyingly quiet about the fact they’ve raised $75 million. Nobody knows!”
Bono even went as far as showing an example of the very modest branding on his iPad cover saying, “Where’s the (RED) branding? Nobody can see that. This is modesty run amok. This is the Apple way. They’re like a religious cult.”
Fortunately Ive took the jabs in stride. The VP of design took the stage shortly after Bono to assure that Apple’s bond with (RED) is a strong one saying, “We started in 2006 with one (RED) product, a Nano, and now we’ve got well over half a dozen. It’s been really, really special for us.” It seems Bono’s digs at Ive may have been an attempt to get other investors fired up enough to throw their hats into the ring and get on board with the cause.
At the (RED) Auction at Sotheby’s in NYC, Bono had nothing but good things to say about Apple VP of design Jony Ive, who along with Marc Newson designed a range of unique items for the cause. MYWW host Gina Giordan chatted with the front man who called Ive and Newsom, “two greatest designers in the world.”
