Big names are coming to Central Park this fall to bring awareness and encourage action over the global poverty issue.

Jay Z, Carrie Underwood, No Doubt, Fun, Tiesto and the Roots are headlining the Global Citizen Festival this fall.  On September 27, the artists are scheduled to come to New York to help the organizations goals to support the organizations goal to eradicate extreme poverty by the year 2030.  This will be the third year for the free concert – timed to happen with the United Nations general assembly meeting.  The event aims to inspire political action and earnest public involvement on the issue of poverty.  Up to 60,000 concertgoers are expected to attend this year.

“This year we think we have an extraordinary opportunity to focus on three of the most pressing issues facing the global community,” said Hugh Evans, chief executive of the Global Poverty Project.  He explained that the issues are education, sanitation and vaccination and each are tied with an ambitious solution.

Most tickets are earned though tasks on globalcitizen.org rather than bought. Concertgoers can go to the website to take part in awareness tasks like watching videos or sending out approved tweets.  One task is to sign a petition telling world leaders to direct $7.5 billion to the GAVI Alliance, an organization with the objective of distributing vaccines to children in developing countries.  There also is the Days of Action initiative that encourages people to go out and volunteer.

Evans also spoke about the artist choices for the concert this year.  “It’s incredible to have the king of hip-hop on one end of the bill, coupled with the king of E.D.M. on the other end of the bill, and in the middle we’ve got one of the biggest country stars in America.  There’s so much diversity on this bill, and that’s a very conscious decision.”
