This morning, in a tweet he quickly deleted (contractual issue or PR stunt?), Dan Aykroyd confirmed he is currently in Boston shooting his scene for the new Ghostbusters movie. This could be a passing of the torch that the reboot really needs.
The cast of the new Ghostbusters is an extremely talented troupe of funny ladies: Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon and of course, Kristen Wiig (You can check out Wiig on MYWW’s coverage of The Diary of a Teenage Girl), as well as Chris Hemsworth, Andy Garcia and Neil Casey. However, director Paul Feig admits the film is still going to reboot and completely ignore the past two films.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In fact, the new Ghostbusters movie looks amazing! But Ghostbusters is a beloved staple in comedy, and just taking the concept of the movie and ignoring the work of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson could be a bad idea.
Ramis sadly passed away in 2014, and Murray doesn’t want to be involved with the movie. So, who else you gonna call? Dan Aykroyd. No disrespect to Ernie Hudson, but Aykroyd is the bigger star. Having Aykroyd appear on camera, even in a minor role, could be a sort of blessing from the old Ghostbusters to the new. It’s not their story anymore, but it’s something they created and they’re still a little part of it.
It’s rumored that the scene Aykroyd will be in will involve him having a funny exchange with Kristen Wiig. Isn’t it exciting to think of these two comedy giants on screen at the same time? Ghostbusters is currently shooting in Boston, and set to come out July 22nd, 2016. If you can’t wait that much to get your dose of Kristen Wiig, check her out in MYWW’s coverage of Diary of a Teenage Girl July 18th at 11:00am and 11:00pm on VVH-TV (Fios Ch. 14 & Cablevision Ch. 78) Don’t wanna watch on cable tv?
